1948 Monaco Grand Prix – Enzo Ferrari’s First Grand Prix Car

by Kristin Frazier

ABOUT THE ARTWORK X Grand Prix de Monaco – Ferrari 166 S ‘Spider Corsa’. Many details are hidden all over the drawing. My artworks are not copies of old photographs. Work on one picture usually takes up to 2 months. Many hours of research and reference material to make sure I rebuild the car and environment exactly the way it was in that race. In addition, all fonts, logos and advertisements were used in those years. The first post-war race in Monaco took place on May 16, 1948, the drivers and teams yearned for real competition and this time the list of participants was impressive: Giuseppe Farina, Luigi Villoresi, Alberto Ascari, Louis Chiron, Louis Rosier, Piero Taruffi and Tazio Nuvolari. And the descendant of the Russian princely family, Igor Troubetzkoy on Ferrari. On the information plate opposite the starting grid, it was written simply: “Prince IGOR. Ferrari. SCUDERIA INTER”, next a simple plate of the future winner of this race “FARINA. Maserati”. Troubetzkoy retired after 58 laps with an accident in which he was pushed off the track by the Monegasque Louis Chiron. Troubetzkoy bought a 166 S ‘Spider Corsa’ from Enzo Ferrari an open 1-seat track car, which outwardly differed from other Spider Corsa by the absence of wheel arch liners. By the way, according to contemporaries, the first Ferrari cars were not painted in bright red colors, but could be of a wide color palette: from red to maroon. Architecture & Landscape: One of the most famous and recognizable race curve – Station Hairpin, the steepest (over 180°), narrowest, slowest and tightest corner in Grand Prix racing. Casino Monte Carlo and the twisted forged gazebo at the top. Organisation & Advertising: – Automobile Club de Monaco logo used in 1948 – The Circuit de Monaco layout used in 1948. My motto Authenticity, precision, and historical accuracy in every brush stroke.
